GMS-S Straightness Measurement

The patented GMS-S permits inline measurement of the straightness and twist of round or profiled rod products in space. The result is the local and global straightness/inclination and twist, without any falsification caused by gravity.

The
Advantages

Determination of straightness/twist of rod products is made complicated not only by their length, but also by the influence of forces acting on the rod from the outside. Static friction on test benches, the influence of gravity, centrifugal forces with rotating test methods, or simply the different subjective perceptions of the examiners will falsify results. The patented GMS-S eliminates external forces with its smart support system. This is comparable to measuring in zero gravity. No moving parts means no wear on the system.

The
Advantages

Determination of straightness/twist of rod products is made complicated not only by their length, but also by the influence of forces acting on the rod from the outside. Static friction on test benches, the influence of gravity, centrifugal forces with rotating test methods, or simply the different subjective perceptions of the examiners will falsify results. The dependence between twist and straightness, in particular when testing with the light gap procedure, also make it hard to assess the results. The straightening process, which is elaborate and expensive in profile production, can be avoided in up to 80% of the primary products if straightness is already ensured. The patented GMS-S eliminates external forces with its smart support system. This is comparable to measuring in zero gravity. No moving parts means no wear on the system.

The
Advantages

In the production area of big pipes (OCTG, LSAW,…) straightness measuring is a very time-consuming process, at which the straightness is measured manually with a thin tensioned wire only horizontally at the pipe-surface. Staff members are evaluating the distance between the tensioned wire and the surface of pipe with a typical ruler.
The newly developed optical measurement technology of MSG enables an automatic straightness measurement at every radial position on pipe in only a few seconds.
